What are we really saying when we say beauty is skin deep?
And at the same token looks don’t matter if you really love a person. I have yet to find many people who say these things who would really consider going out with an "ugly" person or someone thought to be less attractive.

Beauty is only skin deep means that a person may be attractive in looks but underneath it all their personality and behavior is that of a horrible, mean and nasty person. I have gone out with less than attractive people based on their personality.

it is more important to be good inside than looking good on the outside. beauty only lasts so long and then it fades… beauty is in the eye of the beholder, does not make a difference if it is true love.

It’s just another way of saying "don’t judge someone by outward appearances" or "don’t judge a book by its cover" …
In other words, it’s what’s inside that matters. Once you get to know someone and love that person, looks aren’t all that important.

It means that beauty is shallow, because skin forms a very thin layer on the body. I know people who go out with or marry uglies, so it is true. People have to have more going for them than a pretty face.

Then the answer is answered. You just said it. Many people wouldn’t. Because beauty is very important to most. When people get stuck with a bunch of hurt from a pretty woman, well they might say this hackneyeyed expression to a friend. But the first pretty gal who actually gives the jilted man the eye, and hey, ugly ladies you can pack up and go home. No one really believes that beauty is skin deep, it’s been proven all kinds of favors and all kinds of "sympathy" and all kinds of good thoughts are bestowed on the pretty. Most people don’t trust plain or ugly people and overlook them or ridicule them even openly.
Beauty gets more reaction and more interaction, period. Beauty get the benefit of the doubt. Beauty is perceived to be more "intelligent" and successful so beauty is then uplifted inside her or himself to try with support whereas the ugly try against all odds. Men seem to use it (or jealous women) when confronted with the awful truth: I am stuck with a plain wife OR I have been hurt by a pretty one. It’s like a rationale. Not valid, really. You can be both beautiful inside and out. Often that is the case.
Sorry plain ladies and gents.
A lot of beautiful people are talented and GOOD, do good and make others feel good, that IS beauty, giving and being able to feel good about yourself. Life is cruel, the ugly ones are left out and left to be with other uglies. And I didn’t make the rules. Sometimes plain marries pretty and both are happy. That is wonderful. But not often. Not often enough.

Beauty is only skin deep means that other things are more or equally as important, it’s what comes from your heart and your mental attitude towards people,your kindness, your thoughtfulness. All this comprises beauty not just looks alone.
