The quote means that a person should not judge others by how they look. Just because a person looks like a druggy that does not mean they are a druggy, or that they condone that lifestyle. Even if they really are a druggy, that does not mean they should be judged simply by the way they look. They might might be wonderful beneath their rough exterior — like a muddy pearl.

It's only means what you are born with, not what you do to yourself. If you are born with a huge nose and sticky-outy ears, it doesn't reflect your personality. I agree with you on that how your appearance looks can sometimes reflect how you deal with issues, but it's not a perfect phrase. Don't take it too seriously, it just means not to sterotype. An ugly person could be the sweetest person on the planet, but no one would know because they never talk to them for fear of them acting ugly, too.

Beauty is only skin deep is true and as you age most people lose this as their skin ages. However if you are a nice person and smile a lot the illusion of beauty is still there. Some older women can be sensational – like Dame Judi Dench for instance and Catherine Deneuve.
