Do you eat organic food, but never think twice about the chemicals in the personal care products you use on your skin? It’s not easy to find organic skin care and beauty products, but environmentalist and author Anna Lappe has expert tips.

How To Choose Organic Skin And Beauty Products

You may be unpleasantly surprised to learn that unlike food there is no government certified labeling program for organic ingredients in skin care and beauty products. So how can you tell whether you’re choosing organic cosmetics and skin care products or not?

* Read the labels, not just the name of the product. Some products will include the word organic in their name, but on closer inspection of the ingredients you wont find any organic ingredients at all.

* Check the label to see whether the ingredients include petroleum, synthetic preservatives or artificial colors. Also watch out for parabens and phthaltes.

* You can also consult the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep website, www.cosmeticsdatabase.com. You can enter the name of the products you use and see whether they contain ingredients you want to avoid.

Why is light skin considered the standard of beauty?

Posted: under skin beauty.

If you look in the media, you will mostly find light skinned black models, light skinned indian models and light skinned asian models. Light skin is considered the standard of beauty in asia, they hate the sun because they want to be as light as possible. And people say crap like dark skin is exotic, if it’s so exotic why arent we being portrayed much in the media. All we have is people like alek wek.

In Asian countries like India, it’s leftover from a class thing: having lighter skin means you’re not "working class" and you don’t stay out labouring in the sun all day.

why are indians so much obsessed with fair skin? their idea of beauty is being fair?

Posted: under skin beauty.

I visited india and I was surprised that many people think beauty= fairness.there are so many advertisements for fairness creams on the television/newspaperss,almost everywhere.I heard that every home uses a fairness cream and there are people who reject a marriage proposal of a woman if she isn’t fair.
according to me they for a beautiful wheatish(tanned) skin texture.why do they spend so much for light skinned products?

Im not sure but i think it dates back a while back, maybe something do to with the british colonisation/rule in India, after that most indian’s got the idea that being ‘fair’ meant a better status and more respect or beauty.
